A Maine man working as an educational technician has been charged with assault following an incident involving a young child at a Westbrook elementary school.

According to the Westbrook Police Department, 62-year-old Dan Spring of Portland turned himself in early Thursday morning after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 1 at Congin School, where Spring was employed at the time.

Police say the situation involves a 6-year-old student who was allegedly assaulted by Spring during the school day. WMTW News 8 says after receiving a report of the incident, authorities launched an investigation, which was followed by a review from the district attorney’s office. That review led to the decision to issue a warrant for Spring’s arrest.

After turning himself in, Spring was booked at the Cumberland County Jail. He has since posted bail and been released from custody, the news station reported.

At the time of this report, Spring is still listed on the Westbrook School Department's website as a staff member at Congin School. It’s unclear at this point whether he has been placed on leave or if any disciplinary action has been taken by the school district.

WMTW explained that neither police nor school officials have released additional details about the incident, citing the age of the child involved and the ongoing nature of the case.
