Three Maine Corrections Officers Indicted in Jail Payment Scheme
Three former corrections officers at the York County Jail are facing criminal charges after investigators say they accepted payments from an inmate in connection with a planned contraband scheme.
According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, the situation surfaced in April when officials received information suggesting that several officers had taken payments from an inmate at the jail.
WGME 13 explained that those payments were allegedly tied to the intended introduction of contraband inside the facility. During the investigation, all three officers including Kayleigh Hamilton, Emma Kehoe, and Zarek Melick resigned from their positions. Each had been working at the jail for roughly 18 months.
Melick, 26, of Lyman, has been indicted on a Class E charge of receiving improper gifts as a public servant. Kehoe, 25, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was indicted on a Class D conspiracy charge, as well as a Class E count of receiving improper gifts, the news station stated. Hamilton, 38, of Sanford, faces two Class E counts of receiving improper gifts.
The inmate involved, 29-year-old Connor McGlone of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and Maine, has since been transferred to the Maine State Prison. McGlone was indicted on a Class D conspiracy charge and four counts of providing improper gifts to public servants.
WGME went on to say that McGlone has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2015, including convictions for aggravated assault, robbery, theft, vehicle burglary, eluding an officer, and illegal firearm possession. He was already serving time for aggravated assault at the time of the investigation.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office is now prosecuting the case.
