A new report indicates that yet another Maine high school is dealing with hazing allegations involving one of its sports teams and athletes.

According to an article published by WGME 13, the allegations involve members of the hockey team at Topsham's Mt. Ararat High School. The news station explained that the remainder of the school's hockey season has been cancelled due to the disturbing allegations.

In a memo from the interim superintendent released on Sunday, the cancellation of the season was said to be caused by reports of unsportsmanlike conduct that included taunting and 'an increasingly hostile environment' on both the junior varsity and varsity boys' hockey teams.

WGME reported that the hockey coach, who had already been suspended, ended up resigning. The coach said that he was resigning because of the school's failure to bring the hazing concerns to him first so he and his staff could have addressed them sooner.

WGME 13 reported in part,

Superintendent Heidi O'Leary says volunteer coaches stepped down after hockey players and parents wore a team member's jersey number at the last game. She says that one student was being singled out for the ongoing hazing investigation.

Superintendent Heidi O'Leary said about the investigation,

"These actions created a highly charged and divisive environment on the ice, in the locker room and in the stands. As a result, the situation became unmanageable. If the [hazing] allegations are true, there are multiple victims in this case, not just one student."

School officials say that the investigation into the alleged hazing is going to wrap up soon, however, it's unlikely that the hockey season will resume this year after everything that has already happened.
