Hardy Mainers Conquer the Cold at Maine’s Annual 5K and Polar Dip in Casco Bay
Despite bone-chilling winter temperatures, dozens of hardy Mainers refused to shy away from the icy Atlantic on Sunday morning, turning out for a beloved seasonal tradition along the Casco Bay shoreline.
According to WGME 13, The Natural Resources Council of Maine hosted its annual 5K and Polar Dip, an event that blends outdoor recreation, community spirit, and environmental advocacy. Participants began arriving just after sunrise, lacing up their running shoes and gathering at the start line for the three-mile run and walk, which kicked off at 9 a.m.
After crossing the finish line, runners and supporters made their way to Willard Beach, where the bravest among them prepared for the main attraction — a full-on plunge into the freezing ocean. Cheers, laughter, and nervous excitement filled the air as groups counted down together before racing into the icy surf.
For many attendees, the Polar Dip has become a yearly ritual. Some return to challenge themselves against the cold, while others say it’s the sense of community, and the mission behind the event, that keeps them coming back.
The news station reported that all funds raised through registration and donations support the Natural Resources Council of Maine’s efforts to build a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for people across the state. Organizers say every contribution helps advance environmental protection, climate action, and renewable energy initiatives that benefit Maine communities today and for generations to come.
What begins as a shivering sprint into winter waters ultimately ends in smiles, high-fives, and a shared feeling of accomplishment, proof that Mainers are as tough as the climate they’re working to protect.
