Well, it's the annual 4-20 here in Maine (and everywhere else) and marijuana enthusiasts around the globe are preparing to light up a spliff at 4:20 this afternoon. However, some officials in Maine are reminding those who will be partaking that smoking and driving is still a form of OUI.

The department says in part in their Facebook post,

Like alcohol, using Marijuana over the age of 21 is legal in Maine. It is important to remember however that also like alcohol, using marijuana (medical or adult recreational) can impair your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and result in an OUI charge. If you plan to use Marijuana, please don’t drive.

So why is it that marijuana enthusiasts are so eager to partake on April 20th each year? Well, a little digging on the interwebs led us to this answer. According to ABQ news,

The most plausible story comes from Chris Conrad, curator of the Oaksterdam Cannabis Museum in Oakland, California. The secret code “4:20” was originally used by a group of friends at the San Rafael High School in California in the early 1970s who called themselves “the Waldos” and participated in ritually smoking marijuana every day at precisely 4:20pm, getting high in front of a statue of scientist Louis Pasteur.

Oh, and here's a bonus warning from the Bangor Maine Police Department!
