Maine Residents Who Drive Certain Cars May Soon be Charged Extra $250 Per Year
When it comes to living in Maine we're pretty lucky, all things considered. We have mountains, oceans, national parks and world class vacationing. We live in a place where people from all over the world want to visit at least once in their lifetimes.
However, for those of us that live here year-round, there are some things that kinda just..well, suck. Winters in Maine are one of those things. To live in a place as beautiful and inviting in Maine, we have to suffer with winters where going outside makes your face hurt.
In addition to the brutal winters, Maine also has a fairly high tax burden. Especially when you consider our population and average incomes, our tax burden here it pretty high. One of the things I personally can't stand is excise tax.
You make money at your job that you get taxed on before it hits your account. Then, you go out and buy a new car with that money and you pay sales tax on the car. After that, you go to your local town office to register the car where you're hit with an excise tax bill. Awesome sauce.
Now, according to the Kennebec Journal, some Maine drivers may soon be hit with another fee to the tune of $250 bucks. And, even more wild, it actually has bi-partisan support. There's a sentence we're not used to hearing these days.
You see, Maine makes a decent amount of money on the state's 'gas tax'. Did you realize that part of the price for gallon at the pump goes to the state for things like road maintenance and repair?
Well, the state has taken a hit in recent years due to the popularity increase of EVs or electric vehicles. To help fill the gap, the Maine legislature is considering a bill that would charge Maine EV owners an additional $250 fee per year.
It might sound crazy, but Maine is only 1 of 11 states that currently doesn't have an 'EV fee', the KJ reported. The only people I can find that have been vocally opposed are environmentalist groups as they feel the added fee may deter people from purchasing electric cars.
What do you think? Is this a fair deal for Maine?
