Maine Snowmobile Sales Nosedive As Warm & Snowless Weather Impacts The State
Maine is home to some of the best outdoor activities in the entire United States. From mountain biking to boating, hiking, camping and more, the Pine Tree State is no stranger to people flooding into our backyards to enjoy the great outdoors.
However, some of those activities, especially winter ones, can be adversely affected when Mother Nature refuses to cooperate.
By now, everyone is pretty much aware that we have had an extreme lack of snow in Maine this winter. While the mountains and ski areas have done their best to make their own snow pretty much around the clock, many of Maine's thousands of miles of snowmobile trails have been bony and run down due to the lack of fresh powder.
Not only is this bad news for people who like to get out and enjoy the open trails, but it has also adversely affected Maine businesses that cater to the snowmobiling community, i.e. trailside hotels and restaurants.
Not only are those businesses suffering from a less-than-ideal winter weather pattern, but so too are those in Maine that actually sell snowmobiles.
According to an article by WABI, snowmobile sales in late fall and early winter were actually pretty strong, however, now that the winter has mostly passed us by without favorable riding conditions, those sales have dropped off significantly.
And now, if you look at places like Facebook marketplace, more Mainers than ever are listing their snow machines for sale.
Luke McCannell, GM of Bangor Motorsports, told WABI in part,
“Unfortunately, the winter didn’t pan out the way that we wanted it to. Some people got some use, just not as much as they wanted to."
Shawm Carrico, the Sales Manager at Bangor Motorsports went on to add, telling WABI in part,
“We’ve seen some disappointment in the lack of snow. There was some decent riding if you went and chased after it this year. The clubs did an amazing job with what they had to work with, but I think when you don’t see it directly in front of you, when you look out the window, there’s definitely some disappointment there for the snowmobile season."
Hopefully next year we will see a shift in the weather and maybe, just maybe, we will get a winter weather season like we used to see when we were kids.
Okay, that makes me sound old as hell.
