Man Standing on Interstate in Augusta, Maine Struck & Killed Early Friday Morning
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety Spokeswoman, Shannon Moss, a man was killed early on Friday morning in Augusta when he was struck by a passing motorist.
Moss reports that Matthew Galletta, 55 of Manchester, Maine, had stopped his vehicle on the side of Interstate 95, near mile marker 111 Southbound. Though his car was pulled over, it's being reported that Galletta himself was standing in the right-hand lane of travel.
It was at that time that he was struck by a passing pickup truck. Emergency crews rushed to the scene of the crash where 55-year-old Galletta was pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup truck reportedly sustained minor injuries.
Maine State Police say that it is not yet clear why Galletta was standing in the travel lane this morning at about 5:20 when the crash happened. State Police are asking anyone who may have information or who may have witnessed the crash to contact them immediately by calling Trooper Daniel Grenier at 207.624.7076, extension 9.
This is a developing story that we will keep updated as more information is made available to us by the Maine State Police.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Galletta during this incredibly difficult time.
