Maine is in for a stormy start to the week as a strong weather system moves through the region.

According to WABI TV 5, a powerful area of low pressure centered over the Great Lakes Monday morning is expected to track northeast into western Quebec before continuing north of Maine overnight and into early Tuesday. Because the storm’s track will stay to the west of the state, temperatures will remain mild enough that most of the precipitation will fall as rain rather than snow.

Strong southerly winds ahead of the system will push a large amount of moisture into Maine, leading to periods of heavy rain, especially Monday night into early Tuesday morning. A few thunderstorms are also possible, though severe weather is not expected, the news station said.

Rainfall totals across much of the state could reach between 1 and 2.5 inches by Tuesday morning, with the highest totals likely along the coast.

The heavy rain, combined with melting snowpack, could create minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. WABI said there is also the possibility that rising river levels could break up existing ice, which could lead to ice jams and localized flooding along some rivers and streams.

Drivers should be prepared for water on the roads and reduced visibility, particularly overnight and during the Tuesday morning commute.

In addition to the rain, strong winds are expected Monday night into early Tuesday. Wind gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph across much of Maine, with stronger gusts between 55 and 65 mph possible along the coast, WABI said.

Winds of that strength could lead to scattered power outages across parts of the state.

Residents are encouraged to stay aware of changing weather conditions and use caution if traveling during the storm.
