When it comes to the most dangerous creatures on the face of the earth, there are hundreds if not thousands that could kill a human in a matter of seconds.

From the bite of a great white shark to the liquid death venom that comes from an inland taipan snake bite, there is no shortage of life-threatening dangers lurking in the forests and seas.

However, even with all that said, the state of Maine is home (and in big numbers!) to the deadliest creature that has ever existed on the face of the planet.

No, it's not the black bear, moose, lobster, puffin or whitetail deer. While those animals are native to Maine, none of them are nearly as dangerous as this one.

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, the most deadly creature in the entire world is..... drum roll, please..... the mosquito.

That may actually sound like a bit of a joke or even clickbait, but I can assure you, it is not.

According to research from Pfizer, more than 700,000 people a year die all around the world from diseases that are carried by mosquitos. The only benefit of living in Maine is that during the cold months, mosquitos (for the most part) are pretty much non-existent.

However, as things begin to warm up and it stays lighter longer, they will certainly be back with a vengeance.

The CDC goes on to say that,

spreading diseases like malaria, dengue, West Nile, yellow fever, Zika, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis, the mosquito kills more people than any other creature in the world.

The most prevalent disease the mosquitoes carry in the United States in West Nile Virus. The virus, which you can get from a simple mosquito bite, produces symptoms like rash, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain and an array of other symptoms according to Penn Medicine.

So as the weather in Maine begins to warm and the mosquitoes arrive in droves, do yourself a favor and try not to die. Maybe use some bug spray, wear one of those full-body bug nets or, just do what I do, and stay inside where it's air-conditioned and the bugs don't go.
