He is our favorite animal-man... Mr. Drew & His Animals Too!

We've been super-excited to follow his journey into his new education center in Lewiston, Maine. Not only does he have an amazing collection of exotic animals that he has rescued and now cares for, but he's always adding to the repertoire of animals at his center, too.

Recently, we got word from Mr. Drew that he has added a new exotic bird to the 'fleet'. And, when we saw the photos, we new we had to share the news. Mr. Drew recently welcomed a 28-year-old hyacinth macaw named, Scooby Blue. Cuz he's blue.

However, if you're like me, you probably don't know anything about the hyacinth macaw. So naturally, we turned to the interwebs to do a little reading and learning about this awesome creature.

According to information on the hyacinth macaw from One Earth,

The hyacinth macaw is the largest flying parrot species in the world! This bird is recognized around the world for its striking cobalt-blue feathers and amazing yellow rings around its eyes and at the base of its beak.

The hyacinth macaw, according to One Earth, is Native to central and eastern South America, primarily in the Pantanal region of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, and is commonly referred to as a "blue macaw."

What's even more impressive than its colors is its massive size. The hyacinth macaw commonly grows to about 40 inches long. That's almost four freakin' feet! Though, despite its size and wicked-powerful beak, the hyacinth macaw has a gentle and social nature.

As far as feeding time goes, this particular macaw usually snacks on nuts from palm trees using its strong beak to crack them open. Unfortunately, due to habitat destruction and illegal pet trade, the hyacinth macaw has been designated as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect this gorgeous bird and its natural habitats around the globe.
