Naomi Watts’ Netflix ‘Gypsy’ Becomes Netflix’s Latest Cancellation Victim

Not even the less high-concept Netflix series are safe from the cancellation axe, it seems. After one tepidly-reviewed season, Naomi Watts and 50 Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Gypsy is officially out of business.

Netflix confirmed on Friday that the sensual therapy thriller wouldn’t return for a second season, despite only premiering in late June. The ten-part series saw Watts as Jean Halloway, a Manhattan therapist with a seemingly picturesque life who begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.

Gypsy also featured Billy Crudup as Jean’s husband Michael Halloway and Kingsman star Sophie Cookson as Sydney, along with Murder on the Orient Express player Lucy Boynton and Nocturnal Animals alum Karl Glusman as Jean’s patients Allison and Sam. Taylor-Johnson directed the series from producers Liza Chasin and Lisa Rubin, while Watts served as executive producer.

The series now follows The Get Down, Girlboss and Sense8 as some of the streaming outlet’s highest-profile cancellations, though Sense8 at least got the chance to wrap itself up with a 2018 finale. You can watch all of Gypsy on Netflix in the meantime, but did it deserve another session?
