Burnout Pit in Small Maine Town Sparks HUGE Neighborhood Feud
Apparently, nothing gets a small Maine town fired up quite like the smell of burning rubber.
A controversial burnout pit in Norridgewock, Maine, has become the center of a heated neighborhood feud, with some residents calling it a nuisance and others defending it as good, clean fun.
The attraction, known as Jeffrey's Automotive Battleground, was built by 23-year-old Jeffrey Daniels on his grandmother's property off Ward Hill Road.
And this wasn't exactly a cheap backyard project, to say the least.
According to the Kennebec Journal, Daniels reportedly spent around $30,000 creating a 60-foot-wide asphalt pit where drivers can spin their tires, create enormous clouds of smoke, and show off their vehicles.
Events reportedly attracted around 150 spectators, but not everyone was thrilled.
Some neighbors complained about excessive noise and tire smoke drifting onto their properties. One resident even compared the noise to "water torture."
Supporters argue the pit gives car enthusiasts a safer alternative to doing burnouts on public roads while bringing business to the area.
The town shut down the operation in August over permitting issues, the Newspaper reported.
More than 100 people attended a recent Planning Board meeting, although some were there for another proposed development.
Instead of making a final decision, board members voted to require a professional noise study.
Meanwhile, voters will consider a temporary moratorium on certain noise-intensive developments October 21.
So, is this harmless automotive entertainment or a neighborhood nightmare? Depending on who you are, or where you live, opinions likely vary quite a bit.
Either way, this little Maine town has found itself in one seriously smoky situation. See what I did there?
