A pickup truck caught fire after it crashed off Ocean Boulevard and onto the beach at Wallis Sands State Park early Sunday morning.

The fire sent a plume of black smoke into the air before firefighters reached the truck about 100 feet off the roadway, according to Rye Police. The driver was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

A witness told police that the truck was speeding before going off the roadway.

Police did not disclose the identity of the driver or if any charges were filed.

A section of the beach at Wallis Sands was closed because of possible debris in the sand.

Witnesses to the crash are asked by Rye Police to call 603-964-5522 or Seacoast Crime Stoppers at 603-431-1199.
