Maine State Police Arrest Lewiston Man in China Stabbing Case

A Lewiston man is facing a felony assault charge after police say he stabbed another man in China and fled the scene.

According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, Maine State Police responded to a reported stabbing in China at approximately 12:54 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators determined that 36-year-old Jacob Hebert of Lewiston allegedly stabbed a 47-year-old Oakland man before leaving the area in a black Jeep Cherokee.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He was treated and later released.

Police said Hebert and the victim knew each other, and officials do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.

A temporary arrest warrant was issued after troopers were unable to immediately locate Hebert.

At approximately 4 p.m. Tuesday, investigators received information that Hebert had returned to the area. A trooper later located his Jeep on Deer Hill Road and monitored the vehicle until additional officers arrived.

Police then conducted a traffic stop and took Hebert into custody without incident.

Hebert was charged with elevated aggravated assault and transported to the Kennebec County Jail. He was being held without bail.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
