Portland, Augusta and More Maine Cities, Towns Have Free Sand During the Winter
While Maine is the perfect place to capture gorgeous winter photos worthy of social media or an old-school postcard, the season also brings cold temperatures and slick ice you have to watch out for.
And as much as shoveling and clearing snow with your blower allows you to at least get through the walkway or ride your car out of the driveway, it doesn't always eliminate the dangerous ice.
Thankfully, a bunch of cities and towns in Maine offer free sand during the winter so you don't have to worry about falling and getting hurt.
Here's a list of some of the places in Maine that offer free winter salt/sand:
Free Winter Sand Portland Maine
According to a Facebook post from the City of Portland Maine, residents of Portland can get two 5-gallon pails per residence from the salt and sand pile at the Payson Park residential sand shed.
Free Winter Sand Augusta Maine
According to a Facebook post from Augusta Public Works, residents of Augusta can get two buckets at a time from the new sand box. On the weekends and in the evenings, the sand box is put right outside the gate.
Free Winter Sand Lewiston Maine
According to Lewistonmaine.gov, residents of Lewiston can get two 5-gallon buckets of sand per visit at 195 River Road.
Free Winter Sand Bangor Maine
According to Bangormaine.gov, residents of Bangor can get two 5-gallon buckets per visit at 530 Main Avenue.
Free Winter Sand Biddeford Maine
According to Biddefordmaine.org, residents of Biddeford can get two 5-gallon buckets per day at the Recycling/Transfer Station at 371 Hill Street.
Free Winter Sand Old Orchard Beach Maine
According to oobmaine.com, residents of Old Orchard Beach can get two 5-gallon buckets per day at 103 Smithwheel Road.
Free Winter Sand Westbrook Maine
According to a Facebook post from Westbrook Public Services, residents of Westbrook can get two 5-gallon buckets at Public Services on Saco Street.
Free Winter Sand Paris Maine
According to a Facebook post from Paris Maine, residents can get it at the Town Garage on Hathaway Road.
