Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse Needs Some Repairs

Lighthouses are certainly a big part of Maine. Some of the most famous photos representing the state, are or at least include lighthouses.

Hard not to like lighthouses. But they aren’t getting any younger.

And one of them needs attention, which hopefully it will get before much more time goes by.

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse has a couple of issues that need attention, and the process is underway to help make that happen.

If you are not familiar with Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, it is at the end of a great walk. Actually halfway, because you have to go back to where you started. And less than two miles round trip.

One of 65 lighthouses in Maine, the Rockland Breakwater lighthouse has been around since 1902.  And in need of some maintenance repairs. The lighthouse needs some brickwork and masonry repairs, and some stonework on the breakwater itself.

Oh and how about a fresh coat of paint?

And good news, if the state approves it, half of the money will come from federal funds.

Lots of involvement with Maine’s lighthouses, The U.S. Coast Guard operates the navigational lights.  The breakwater was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, And the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is operated by Rockland after a volunteer group that had taken care of the upkeep for years turned over the responsibility to the city.
