Scenic Trail Network on Moosehead Lake Named Maine’s Best Spot for Hiking

The popular periodical published an article about the best hike in every state. While you could make an argument for about 100 trails here in Maine being the best, the one chosen by Reader's Digest is an outstanding choice. The magazine's selection is the Mount Kineo State Park trail network.

Located right on Moosehead Lake, this picturesque hike combines four trails that take you up to the summit of Mount Kineo, as well as circle the park. The mountain itself has an elevation of 1,789 feet, making it quite a sight, especially considering it abuts a lake.

The trail is rated easy to moderate depending on the reference guide you use. However, it's pretty safe to say that the majority of folks out there could easily complete these trails.

To get to Mount Kineo State Park, you need to take a shuttle boat from the town of Rockwood. When you get there, you have just over six miles of trails to hike. Choose from four different routes (Indian, Bridle, Carriage or North) to the summit, where a converted fire tower sits. From the top, you’ll see a range of mountains in all directions, plus Moosehead Lake down below.
