A large fire broke out overnight at a trash facility in Orrington, sending heavy smoke into the air and drawing crews from multiple communities.

According to WVII, firefighters from at least 10 departments responded to the Eagle Point Energy Center, formerly known as the PERC plant, around 9:30 Tuesday night.

Heavy smoke was visible in the area and in nearby towns as crews worked to get the fire under control. WVII reports the fire appeared to be under control by around 11:30 p.m.

There has been no word yet on any injuries.

This marks the second fire at the facility in less than two years. A previous fire in October of 2024 burned for roughly 10 days.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the facility had been closed following a foreclosure in 2023, though it had announced plans to begin accepting trash again in August of 2025.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection says the facility is licensed as a solid waste transfer facility. That means it can accept trash, consolidate it, and then transport it to another location.
