My Bathroom Leak Was Caused by the Dumbest Little Part Imaginable
You know what’s humbling? Watching part of your downstairs bathroom ceiling basically disintegrate in your hands because of a tiny piece of plastic upstairs.
That’s been my life recently.
It started with a leak coming through the ceiling below our upstairs tub. Naturally, my brain went straight to the expensive possibilities. Bad plumbing. A pipe in the wall. Something catastrophic that would require a contractor, a second mortgage and probably a priest.

Turns out, the culprit was the shower diverter.
Yep. That little plastic piece inside the tub spout that redirects water up to the showerhead decided it had done enough for one lifetime. Water was spraying where it absolutely should not have been spraying, sneaking behind the shower enclosure and eventually making its way downstairs.
By the time I figured out what was happening, the damage was done.
I had soaked drywall, cracked ceiling sections and enough wet material to start tearing the bathroom apart. What began as “let me find this leak” quickly turned into me standing in a partially demolished room surrounded by exposed pipes, insulation and regret.

The good news? The plumbing fix itself was ridiculously simple.
The bad news? Now I have to rebuild everything I ripped out.
So apparently, at nearly 40 years old, I’m about to teach myself how to hang drywall, tape seams and mud a ceiling like I’m friggin’ Dan Conner from Roseanne.
I’ve already borrowed tools. I’ve watched videos. I’m using phrases like “joint compound” with confidence I absolutely have not earned.
All because of one stupid little plastic shower diverter.
Homeownership is magical.
