Four Rescued After Boat Strikes Rock Off Maine Coast

Four people were rescued from a sinking boat off the coast of Ogunquit early Tuesday morning after the vessel struck a rock and began taking on water.

According to the Ogunquit Fire Department, emergency crews were called to the area shortly after midnight following reports that a boat had hit Bibb Rock offshore.

The impact caused the vessel to begin sinking, prompting a marine rescue response. Crews were able to reach the boat and safely remove all four people who were aboard.

WGME is reporting that the passengers were then brought back to Perkins Cove, where emergency medical personnel were waiting to evaluate them. Officials said all four were later transported for additional medical care.

No information was immediately released about the nature or severity of any injuries, and authorities did not provide details about what may have caused the boat to strike the rock.

The condition of the vessel was also not immediately available.

Fire officials said the incident marked the second marine rescue in that area so far this season.

The rescue required a coordinated response during the overnight hours, with crews working in darkness to reach the passengers and return them safely to shore, WGME said.

Authorities have not released the names of the people involved.
