Someone Opened Up a Maine Fire Hydrant & Then Took Off, Police Investigating
According to WGME 13, police are currently searching for a vandal that reportedly opened a fire hydrant on Saturday, left it running and fled the scene.
The hydrant was opened to a level that was allowing thousands of gallons per minute to pour into the roadway. The incident was reported by a resident that was nearby and the water district was able to get to the hydrant and shut it off before any major damage was done.
The Sanford Water District, reported that the gushing water could have 'easily washed out too much damage was done, but this action could have caused serious damage and consequences.'
The district made mention of how events like this have the possibility of damaging the city's streets and even the drinking water infrastructure.
The district asks anyone with information to please contact the Sanford Police Department at 207.324.3644.
