When Summer Meant Basketball Camp at the Augusta Civic Center

Talking with my co-worker about his son attending basketball camp at the Augusta Civic Center this month brought back so many memories from my own days at basketball camp there. Then I happened to see the Press Herald article about Paul Vachon, and it made me think even more about those summers. According to the Press Herald, Coach Vachon is back doing what he loves after overcoming incredible challenges, and it's great to see him continuing to impact young athletes.

It always seemed like basketball camp week was the hottest week of the entire summer, but that never mattered to us. Hundreds of girls from all over Maine would come together for the Capital City Clinic with Paul Vachon. We spent our days working hard, learning new skills, competing against talented players from across the state, and making friendships that lasted long after camp ended.

Hearing my co-worker's son talk about camp made me smile because so many traditions are still part of the experience. They're still playing Pickleball, the shooting contest game we all looked forward to, along with half-court shots, drill stations, and all the competitions that made camp so much fun. Those activities weren't just games; they built confidence, teamwork, and a love for basketball.

Looking back, the memories from the Augusta Civic Center are some of my favorites. It wasn't just about becoming a better basketball player. It was about the people you met, the memories you made, and being part of something you'll never forget.
