Three new businesses are preparing to open at The Downs in Scarborough as development of the mixed-use community continues.

Developers say Verizon, Maine Community Bank and NBT Bank will all be joining the project’s town center.

According to WGME, The Downs has added more than 50 businesses since work began in 2019, according to the development team. Those businesses have helped create more than 1,500 jobs, with additional growth expected as new commercial spaces open.

The project has also added more than 700 residential units, which developers say is helping address Maine’s ongoing housing shortage.

Construction on the town center began in 2023. It is designed to serve as a central hub for The Downs, combining retail, financial services, housing and other businesses within the larger development, the news station reported.

The arrival of the three new businesses marks the latest expansion at the former Scarborough Downs property, which has been transformed over the past several years into a growing residential and commercial community.

Developers say additional businesses, housing and community spaces are still planned as The Downs continues to grow. The long-term goal is to create a walkable town center where people can live, work, shop and access services without having to travel far from the development.
