Titanic Artifact with Powerful Story Displayed in South Portland, Maine
A rare and powerful piece of history made a local appearance in South Portland, giving people a chance to see something directly connected to one of the most famous disasters of all time.
Over the weekend, a life vest from the RMS Titanic sinking was put on display at the Maine Mall. The artifact is owned by Seafarer's Friend, a nearly 200-year-old nonprofit that supports mariners and preserves maritime history.
According to the organization, the life vest has been in their possession for about 70 years. It was originally part of a private collection owned by a seafarer who responded in the aftermath of the Titanic tragedy. After his passing in the 1960s, the vest was donated to Seafarer’s Friend and has remained one of their most meaningful items ever since.
Only about a dozen life vests from the Titanic are known to still exist today, making this an incredibly rare artifact. The vest is believed to have been recovered the day after the ship sank and likely belonged to someone who did not survive.
For many who saw it at the mall, the experience was a sobering reminder of the lives lost and the lasting impact of the tragedy more than a century later.
The life vest is now kept at the Portland Seafarer’s Center on Commercial Street, where it remains part of the organization’s collection.
