United Way Day of Action Brings Hundreds of Volunteers Across Southern Maine

Hundreds of volunteers spent Thursday giving back to local nonprofits across southern Maine as part of United Way of Southern Maine’s annual Day of Action.

United Way says volunteers from more than two dozen companies participated in the event, which is known as the largest single-day volunteer effort in the region.

According to WGME, crews were sent to more than a dozen different sites throughout southern Maine, helping organizations with a variety of projects. Some volunteers assisted with food distribution, while others helped with community improvement efforts and other work designed to support local nonprofits.

In Portland, one group spent the day at the MaineHealth Food Pantry, where volunteers helped stock shelves and keep the pantry’s operations moving smoothly.

Elliott Greene, Director of Volunteer Engagement for United Way of Southern Maine, said the event is an important way to support the network of nonprofits serving people in need. He said organizations like the MaineHealth Food Pantry play a major role in helping United Way stay connected to the needs of the community, the news station reported.

United Way originally had about 40 volunteer events scheduled for Thursday. However, severe weather forced organizers to reschedule roughly half of them.

Even with those changes, hundreds of volunteers still turned out to support organizations doing important work across southern Maine.
