When it comes to recreation in Maine, particularly winter recreation, there are so many different options it can make your head spin.

However, until recently, you had to travel quite a distance to get to some of those activities. For many, since we don't get the kind of snowfall that we did in the 80s and 90s, finding perfect snowmobiling conditions requires trailering up and driving several hours north.

Maine has some of the best downhill skiing in the county

When it comes to our downhill skiing, Maine is a premier destination for thrill seekers from New England and beyond. People travel literal hours just for the chance to hit the slopes at one of Maine's premier ski spots like Sunday River, Sugarloaf or Saddleback.

Unfortunately, unless you live in Carabassett Valley, Newry or Rangeley, Mainers are also often burdened with having to drive an hour or more to get to the slopes. And while many folks love heading to Maine's big mountains, it would be convenient if there was an option locally if you wanted to make a quick trip or two down the hill.

Where is the downhill skiing in Waterville, Maine?

When you think Waterville, Maine, your first thought isn't usually 'skiing destination', however, thanks to some really awesome people, and some really awesome snow-making-machines, it has become a reality.

According to an article published by The Kennebec Journal, the Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville is home to year-round family fun. From jogging, hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, Quarry Road has been a Godsend for people looking to get outside.

Victor Esposito Jr., Quarry Road’s lead ski coach, told the KJ in part,

“We’ve become a mecca of sorts because nowhere else has snow, quite literally. People come from all over, 20, 30, 40 miles, because we’re not a two-hour drive like most of the resorts and we don’t charge anywhere near as much: And we actually have snow.”

Do I have to walk up the hill or is there a lift?

Currently, there is no lift at the Quarry Road Recreation Area, so you will definitely be getting your step count in if you want to make a few passes down the hill, however, according to Esposito Jr., the plan is to install a T-bar style lift in the next couple of years.

So if the lack of Maine snow has you feeling down and you don't want to travel hours on end to get to one of the big mountains, consider heading over to the Elm City and give the Quarry Road trails a try. Perfect for beginners, too!
