The 'five second rule' is that if food hits the floor, you have five seconds to pick it and still be safe. Well, it turns our food does not pick up that many germs when it lands on the floor. It was tested on carpet, laminated surface, and tile. Researchers did not see any big growth. But the type of flooring made a difference.

Bacteria were least likely to stick when food was dropped on carpet. So there you go. The 'five second rule' is real. It is even better IF you don't drop you food on the floor. And if you have a dog you need not worry about any of this, your dog will take of it for you!
