Renee’s Reflection on Two-Way Traffic in Downtown Augusta
I was looking through my social media the last few days working on another project, and I found the photos I took while the 92 Moose Morning Show in downtown Augusta to be there when the big change happened. That was August of 2019.
I will tell you I did not support the change back to two-way traffic. I liked the one-way traffic; I found it easier for me. But I am not a downtown Augusta business owner and I have no idea about urban planning and how something like that traffic flow could impact the whole downtown area. I do not live downtown and really, while my personal preference is for the one-way traffic…it was just that a personal preference.
I have a friend who owns a downtown Augusta business and is a supporter of the change. After a year and a half of two-way traffic, I recently asked her if she is happy with the change? Her answer came with a big smile and a very clear ‘yes. Well, that is good enough for me! She has seen more traffic in her business.
My reasons for having any feelings about the two-way traffic are primarily selfish. With the redesign, I lost my favorite parking spot, and I don’t like turning left on to Water Street from the bottom of Winthrop Street…I just can’t get used to looking both ways before I travel through Downtown Augusta.
