Six Displaced After Apartment Fire in Augusta, Maine
Six people have been displaced and a family pet is unaccounted for after a fire tore through an Augusta apartment building Monday night.
According to WABI TV 5, firefighters were called to the scene on Mount Vernon Avenue shortly after 9:30 p.m. When they arrived, residents had already evacuated safely. Augusta Fire Chief Dave Groder said that quick action likely prevented injuries.
Crews worked for more than two and a half hours to get the fire under control. The flames caused significant damage inside the building, leaving it unlivable for the six people who called it home, the news station reported.
The Red Cross is assisting those displaced. While everyone inside escaped unharmed, officials say a cat belonging to one of the residents is still missing.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Tuesday morning.
