On Thursday afternoon, a couple Maine women who were out enjoying a walk in a popular Maine park made a gruesome discovery that ended in a police presence and the closure of part of the park.

According to WGME 13, two women who were walking along a trail inside Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth came across the body of a female that had apparently washed up on the rocks.

The news station reports that the women told officials that they had been walking along the Lookout Trail for Portland Head Light when they made the discovery. They say the body was found on Thursday afternoon.

When first responders arrived on scene they promptly closed off the area and removed the body from the rocks below. At this time the investigation remains ongoing and no identity has been released yet.

Additionally, it is too early to know what the cause of death may have been and what led to the woman ending up in the ocean in the first place.

According to Wiki, Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth is a 90 acre park is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike as it has several different walking trails, contains the popular Portland Head Light and is even home to World War I and World War II US Army buildings.

This is a developing story that we will continue to keep updated as more information becomes available to us either by Cape Elizabeth officials or through our media partners at WGME News 13 in Portland.
