John Williams has been sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the 2018 killing of Cpl. Eugene "Gene" Cole.

The state had been asking for the maximum life sentence, while the defense had asked for 40 years. Williams was found guilty of murder in June in the killing of Somerset County Sheriff's Deputy Corporal Eugene Cole.

Williams was accused of shooting and killing Corporal Cole in Norridgewock on April 25, 2018.

During the trial, the question of if Williams killed  Cole was never debated.  The question was whether or not he did it intentionally.

The prosecution argued that Williams knew what he was doing and did it because he did not want to go to jail.

The defense claimed the defendant was high on drugs and did not know what he was doing.
