A familiar name to Red Sox fans is spending some time in Maine this week, and it’s all for a good cause.

According to WGME, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is taking part in the Coach Norm Gagne Classic Thursday afternoon at Boothbay Country Club, with proceeds from the event benefiting high school hockey players across Maine.

Schilling is best remembered in New England for his role in Boston’s historic 2004 World Series championship run. He famously pitched through an injured ankle during the postseason, with the image of his blood-stained sock becoming one of the most recognizable moments from that championship season.

He also helped the Red Sox win another World Series in 2007. Over his postseason career, Schilling went 11-2 with a 2.23 ERA, numbers that helped build his reputation as one of baseball’s top big-game pitchers.

Before coming to Boston, Schilling also starred with the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks. He was named co-MVP of the 2001 World Series after helping Arizona defeat the New York Yankees, and he finished his career with more than 3,100 strikeouts and six All-Star selections.

Now, Schilling is lending his name and support to an event much closer to home for Maine sports fans.

The Coach Norm Gagne Classic is being held Thursday at Boothbay Country Club, with money raised going toward supporting Maine high school hockey players.
