Our 12-year old enjoyed a milestone today. She had her ears pierced. What? I can hear you now. "She's 12 and you haven't let her get her ears pierced." My answer, "Yeah, you're right. I haven't!"

We waited for our oldest daughter and we waited for Alexis. To tell you the truth, I would have waited longer. I've always believed that the girls should be completely old enough to take care of her ears herself and everything that goes along with the piercing. Today, I was blind-sided. While school shopping, Alexis called and asked, saying it was okay with my wife if it was okay with me. So, either I was going to be the bad guy, or I was going to have to trust that she was now mature enough to take on the responsibility. I went with showing the faith. She is way too excited!

What do the experts say? Wendy Sue Swanson, M.D., a parents.com advisor and a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital, "they "encourage parents to wait until their child is at least 6 months old to get her ears pierced...on the flip side, if you want your child to make her own decision about ear piercing, it's best to wait until she's around 10 or so to have that discussion."

Kid's Fashion says, it is "very personal decision. The only correct answer is the answer that is right for you and your family. Trust yourself and go with your gut feeling."
