Following A $9 Million Renovation, A Staple Of The Portland Music Scene Is Getting Ready To Re-Open
Opening in 1997, The Asylum was a fixture of the Southern Maine music scene. Tens of thousands of fans watched hundreds of national acts perform there. But, after nearly two decades, the owners felt a face lift was needed.
In the Spring of 2016, owners Valerie Levy, Krista Newman and Laurie Wille announced the venue would close for a major renovation. Honestly, "Major" might have been an understatement.
The last show at the old venue was in late June of 2016.
Now, eight months (and $9 million) later, the venue is nearly ready to re-open! Aura, as it is now called, features a much larger capacity (approx 1,000), sports bar, function rooms, and seating that looks down on the stage. It is truly impressive! I can't wait to see a show there!
