Heritage Augusta Restaurant Closes Its Doors Permanently
As we've reported far too frequently over the last year, another Central Maine restaurant is closing its doors.
According to WABI, after being in operation for nearly four decades, Rebecca's Place, located on Eastern Avenue (Rt 17) in Augusta has closed its doors.
The decision to close, a tough one for owner Nancy Berg, was brought on by several factors. The initial stay at home order and mandates near the beginning of the pandemic. And, after she re-opened, she had trouble keeping help. In the last days of operation she only had one cook and one waitress.
Nancy Berg and her husband opened the business in 1976. The business was named after Nancy. Rebecca was a nickname her late husband had for her.
She explained:
Someone would walk through the door and he’d say here comes Mary Lou or with me it was here comes Rebecca. We started out with a counter and take out with 10 seats, and then that grew to another room and another room to what it is today, after two fires.
Even though she says she'll miss her customers, Nancy does look forward to spending more time with family.
She does intend to sell the building.
