Dangerous Heat and Severe Storms Possible in Maine Tuesday

Maine will begin the week with warm sunshine before dangerous heat, humidity and the threat of severe thunderstorms arrive Tuesday.

According to WGME, Monday will feature plenty of sunshine with some afternoon clouds as temperatures climb into the mid-to-upper 80s. Humidity will steadily increase throughout the day, making conditions feel increasingly sticky by the evening. An isolated shower is also possible Monday night.

The heat and humidity will intensify Tuesday, when high temperatures are expected to reach the low-to-mid 90s. A heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with heat index values potentially approaching 100 degrees.

Residents are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water and check on children, older adults and others who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.

Attention will then turn to the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday night as a cold front moves into the state. Storms are expected to develop around or shortly after sunset before moving south through the foothills, interior sections and coastal areas by approximately 11 p.m, the news station said.

Damaging wind gusts are expected to be the primary threat, though large hail and one or two tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Any thunderstorm could also produce heavy rainfall.

WGME went on to say that parts of Maine are under an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms. The last time portions of the state were placed under a Day 2 enhanced risk was June 23, 2024. The cold front will bring somewhat cooler and more comfortable air Wednesday, though temperatures could still reach the upper 80s or around 90 degrees.

Another shower or thunderstorm will be possible during the second half of Thursday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 70s and 80s through the weekend.
