As Mainers, we are no strangers to packing up, hitting the road and adventuring out. Especially when it means staying in hotels and enjoying the comforts of new beautiful places.

I came across something on Facebook that stopped me in my tracks, and I had no idea this was even possible. So naturally it made me a bit nervous and I am sharing it not to freak you out, but just to make sure we’re all staying extra cautious.

Recently, a woman shared a photo online of an outlet in her hotel bathroom, showing what looks like a tiny lens-like spot in the upper hole and asking if it could be a camera?

Comments of people concerned started to pour in. She kept the hotel name private in case she was mistaken. But I was intrigued so, I did some research and was shocked to find that hidden cameras in outlets are indeed a real thing.

And yes, I know, just one more thing to check in a hotel room, but this is definitely going on my travel checklist.

Check the photo. What do you think?

While it hasn’t been confirmed as an actual camera, it raised an important issue, tiny cameras hidden in everyday items are more common than you might think!

The reality of hidden cameras in hotels.. yes, it’s a thing.

Because of the advances in tech, camera's are now as small as a piece of dust, called micro-cameras and can fit in [places most of us would never suspect. So while you are checking the outlets, make sure to look closely at the smoke detectors, and alarm clocks too.

Just a quick search reveals countless options for these micro-cameras, often sold as "discreet" or "nanny cams."

While they can serve practical purposes, they also open the door for misuse by criminals and creeps, sometimes even in hotels.

Next time you are at a hotel, make sure to check everything. I know it's stressful but I would rather sleep at night knowing no one is watching me snore.
