Age is just a number, even if you are 101.

Virginia Oliver has been lobstering since she was just 8 years old and she is still at it going strong. The Rockland, Maine woman still cooks Sunday dinners for her family and drives her white pickup truck to Hannaford to pick up the fixings. She tells newscentermaine.com, “They call me the lobster lady.”

Do what you love and never work a day in your life.

Virginia Oliver seems to be living the secret to a long life. Do what you love, live long, and prosper. When you ask Virginia what she likes best about being a lobsterwoman she says, “being the boss,” according to newscentermaine.com. If she doesn’t feel like going out one day, she doesn’t.  She answers to no one and loves her independence. I am beginning to feel like the word ‘retired’ is not in the New England vocabulary. Virginia her son Max, a young 78 years old, work together on the boat for about 3 days a week. All four of Virginia Oliver’s children took to the sea and became lobstermen just like her late husband.

Born in Rockland

Virginia was born on Claredon Street in Rockland, Maine she still lives on the same street just in a different house where she and her husband raised their children. She is probably more comfortable at sea than on land. Imagine the life she has seen over the course of 101 years.

They say attitude is everything and Virginia Oliver certainly has the right attitude.  When asked by newscentermaine.com when she will retire her lobster pots she said “When I die.  Everybody has to die sometime. You not gonna live forever, so why let it bother you?” Amen Virginia, you gave me a smile today learning of your story and I think I will worry a bit less this week because of it.
