According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, a Skowhegan man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred last month in Augusta, according to the Maine State Police.

Authorities said the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central arrested 30-year-old Edward Longley of Skowhegan on Wednesday, March 18th, at approximately 2 PM.

Longley was taken into custody in Skowhegan and charged with Murder and Elevated Aggravated Assault related to a shooting that occurred on February 2nd on Flagg Street in Augusta.

Investigators say the shooting left 51-year-old Billyjack Curtis of Augusta with life-threatening injuries.  Curtis later died as a result of those injuries.  An autopsy conducted by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined the cause of death to be gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was ruled homicide.

A second person was also injured during the incident.  Authorities identified the victim as 40-year-old Sherry Gilley of Brunswick.  Gilley was initially transported to MaineGeneral Health for treatment before being transferred to Maine Medical Center for further care.  Officials said she has since been released from the hospital and is continuing to recover from her injuries.

Following his arrest, Longley was transported to the Somerset County Jail, where he is currently being held without bail.

State police officials said the investigation remains active, but no additional details are being released at this time.
