Over the years, it has been a number of things. of course, it started out as an actual fort. Later, it was a general store and even an apartment building for the people working at the Edwards Mill complex.
Old Fort Western now serves as a museum that brings 300 years of Maine and New England history to life through guided tours, living-history interpreters, hands-on educational programs, and summer youth experiences. The site also serves as the Kennebec Valley center for archaeological research and is home to historical reenactment groups.
