One of the most common ways to experience the Maine outdoors is to go fishing.

For many of us, it was our first experience in the Maine wilderness.  Our parents would take us wading in a brook or we'd find a spot along the side of a lake to cast our line.  At the very least, it was a fun way to experience nature.  And, if we were lucky, we might actually catch something.

Fishing is one of the easiest ways to take in all that our state has to offer.  You don't need to go through a lot of training or spend a lot of money on expensive equipment.  All you need is a license, a pole (which does not need to be super expensive), appropriate bait, and to know where to go.

Keep in mind that there is a cost for fishing license.  If you are a resident of the state, you can get a license for the season for about $30.  For non-residents, it will cost about $80 for the season.  If you are a non-resident you can also get a cheaper license that is only valid for a few days.

Now, if you want to avoid paying for a license, there are a few days each year where you can fish without a license in Maine.

The next time you'll be able to fish for free is May 30th and 31st, 2026.

Keep in mind that you still have to follow all of the fishing rules and you cannot be barred from having a fishing license.
