Maine Restaurant Icon Wins One of the Food World’s Biggest Honors
Portland’s nationally recognized food scene has another major reason to celebrate.
Local restaurateur Dana Street has won a James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur, one of the highest honors in the culinary industry. The award recognizes restaurant owners and operators who have made a major impact through leadership, hospitality, and contributions to their communities.
According to WGME, Street is one of the most influential names in Portland dining. He is the founder and driving force behind several of the city’s most iconic restaurants and food businesses, including Fore Street, Scales, Street & Company, and Standard Baking Company.
Those businesses have become staples of Portland’s restaurant scene, helping define the city’s reputation for high-quality food, thoughtful hospitality, and a strong connection to local ingredients.
The James Beard Foundation’s Outstanding Restaurateur award is considered one of the most respected national honors in food and dining. For Street, the recognition reflects decades of work building restaurants that have not only become local favorites, but have also helped put Portland on the map as one of the country’s best small food cities, WGME said.
Portland has received national attention for years for its restaurants, chefs, seafood, bakeries, and creative food culture. Street’s restaurants have played a major role in that growth, drawing both locals and visitors to the city’s dining scene.
The award is also a major win for Maine’s culinary community as a whole, highlighting the continued impact local chefs, restaurant owners, bakers, farmers, fishermen, and hospitality workers have had on the state’s growing food reputation.
For Portland, it’s another reminder that the city’s food scene is not just popular here at home, it continues to earn serious respect on the national stage.
