Maine is famous for its food, especially our fresh seafood, like lobster and clams. But there's more to Maine's food scene than just seafood; we have a wide variety of options. While seafood is what we're best known for, so, it's understandable if you don't think of Maine first when you picture a retro diner, but we've got plenty of those too.

But first, what even is considered a ‘retro diner?’

Generally speaking, a retro diner is a restaurant designed to recreate the American dining experience of the 1950s and 1960s. These diners often feature colorful, vintage decor with classic posters, neon signs, and matching booths or bar stools.

The menu typically includes comfort foods like burgers, fries, onion rings, and milkshakes, with the nostalgic atmosphere being a focal point, often enhanced by jukeboxes and other elements that transport guests back in time.

So, what’s the best ‘retro diner’ in Maine?

LoveFood’s selection for Maine’s best ‘retro diner’ is the A1 Diner in Gardiner. LoveFood had the following to say about the iconic Pine Tree State stop:

The Pine Tree State has its fair share of retro dining cars, but A1 Diner, built in 1946, is up there with the most charming. With its pastel yellow exterior, checkered floor, tiled walls, blue vinyl booths and bar stools, neon clock, and floral print tablecloths, it’s cheery and nostalgic. The food is suitably eclectic too, with fish tacos, and a BLT with scallops among popular choices.
