A friend of mine recently celebrated his son passing his driver's test and if you’re heading to the BMV soon, there’s a change you’ll want to know about.

According to News Center Maine, the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles now has a rule where they are providing their own interpreters for the drivers exam. This was implemented on February 1st, 2026.

What this means: The applicants no longer are allowed to bring a personal interpreter with them to their written test.

This is an update that has come after concerns were brought up about possible cheating, according to the article.

When outside interpreters were used, allegedly people were concerned that cheating took place.

What The New Policy For New Drivers at Maine BMVs?

Some lawmakers were contacted by folks who believed was being taken advantage of. The findings that were brought to the Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee didn’t show statistical difference in pass-fail rates between those who used interpreters and those who did not.

But under this new policy, the BMV will now supply applicants with interpreters who qualify for them across the state.

According to this article, this will be free of charge for anyone need assistance with language help during the written exam. And because of these concerns, the state will now track how many people use this service and the pass-fail rates.

So, if you or someone you know needs an interpreter for a Maine drivers exam, you’ll coordinate with the BMV before you go.

It’s a small but important change for improving consistency and oversight in the driving test process.
