3 Favorite Stores We’ve Lost in the Maine Mall That Disappointed Me When They Closed
Does anyone else feel like we're constantly losing stores that feel like comfort to us in the Maine Mall? Doesn't it feel like we're walking on eggshells, waiting for the news that the one store keeping you going to the mall is also closing?
After these three stores went down, it now seems like every other "bigger" clothing store in that plaza is following suit.
1. Abercrombie & Fitch
Back in 2019, A&F permanently closed their doors (I still remember exactly where I was the day I found out). My first question was, why did they close? Then I wondered, "Where the hell am I supposed to find the same type of high-waisted, skinny stretch jeans now?" Before you say anything, no, online doesn't count, because you can't try them on first.
Why did Abercrombie & Fitch close?
According to quora.com,
Abercrombie & Fitch did face several challenges that impacted its performance, including changing consumer preferences, increased competition from fast-fashion brands, and a lack of product innovation.
2. Forever 21
I think I can speak for many when I say that this was a huge loss for teens/young adults when this place closed its doors for good back in 2020.
Why did Forever 21 close?
According to mainepublic.org, they filed for bankruptcy, which has been trending lately amongst larger clothing stores.
I guess it's true, nothing lasts forever ;)
3. Olympia Sports 2022
I used to LOVE romping around in this store and looking at things I'd never buy. Well, at least until 2019, when they closed their doors permanently.
Why did Olympia Sports Close?
Retaildive.com states that in 2019, the company was acquired by running specialty retailer JackRabbit, which was owned by private equity firm CriticalPoint Capital. Olympia Sports shuttered 76 stores as part of that transaction.
Isn't it kinda crazy how we're so used to getting the bad news about another store biting the dust in the Maine Mall? I remember a time where it was a HUGE deal if even one store closed down, as it would change my entire mall experience. We all understand the mall experience; I don't even have to explain that. IYKYK.
