Have you ever heard of the Maine beach that is said to "sing"?

Nestled along the rugged coastline is the enchanting Jasper Beach, a hidden gem known for its tranquil beauty and unique natural phenomenon.

One of the most extraordinary features of this calming Machiasport location is the melodious sound emitted by its rocks as waves wash over them.

It's one of the most prominent things people mention about the place when they visit.

On TripAdvisor, Bonnie said:

"As the waves retreat from the beach, the stones tumble against each other & create a musical 'song'. Very relaxing. Wish we could have spent all day there."

Or Michael H noted on the travel site:

"When the water went out with each wave...it was like the rocks were trying to sing....a unique sound that I have never heard at a beach before."

Of course, there are even videos you can watch (and hear) the sounds of this special beach:

And here's one more recent where you can hear the sounds of the rocks and the waves in peaceful harmony:

If you couldn't tell by the videos, this is not a sandy beach with Baywatch lifeguards. Instead, smooth stones of various shapes, sizes and colors cover the area.

According to a Maine Geological Survey from the Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry in 2000, the half-a-mile beach gets its name from the jasper stone. And yes, you probably will notice the red stones found on the beach, but they aren't truly jasper.

To get extra specific, if you're into that kind of thing, "jasper is a form of silica that is enriched in iron, whereas the red stone on Jasper Beach is a fine-grained volcanic rock called rhyolite," according to the report.

Now you know.

The crashing of the waves against the shoreline, the salty ocean breeze, the vast waters that stretch to the horizon, and the touch of smooth colorful stones combine to make for an unforgettable sensory experience.

Jasper Beach is worth the trip and an excellent way to spend the day "getting back to nature."

Oh, and the place is free! So take a picture for the gram but leave the rocks for everyone else.

You'll be glad you made the trip.
