This Classic ’90s Commercial for a Southern Maine Burger Joint Is Gold
Who doesn’t love a little nostalgia, especially when it comes to Maine?
Let’s rewind back to 1993, when grunge ruled the radio, Crystal Pepsi was somehow a thing, and moviegoers were lining up to see blockbusters like The Fugitive and Jurassic Park.
But amid all that pop culture greatness, there was another masterpiece that deserves its moment in the spotlight: this unforgettable television commercial for a beloved burger joint in Saco that is still rocking and rolling to this day.
Behold, in all its glory, folks! Literally everything about this Rapid Ray's commercial is flawless.
Rapid Rays Burger Joint is a True Maine Gem
Perhaps I should explain Rapid Ray's to those who are unfortunately unaware of this gem. Rapid Ray's is an iconic fast food joint in Southern Maine. Located right on Main Street in Saco, the restaurant has been an institution in the town ever since it opened in 1953.
Rapid Ray's offers burgers, hot dogs, chicken, lobster rolls, and other fried seafood delights, along with delicious fries and onion rings. They even serve chocolate milk. I mean, how many places can say that?
Apparently, back in the early ’90s, the marketing team at Rapid Ray’s decided it was time to expand the restaurant’s sphere of influence with a television commercial. But this wasn’t just any commercial — it was one that delivered all the goods. Let’s break down this masterpiece in all its glory.
Mustaches in Commercials are Always Beautiful
Rapid Ray's Always Prides Itself on Teamwork
Nothing screams early '90s like a couple of bros rocking some crumb catchers. I know hipsters have made it cool to sport the lip broom again, but these are true vintage bad boys. Nice work, fellas.
Rapid Ray's is Known for its Friendly Staff
You can’t have a restaurant commercial without showing everyone working together like it ain’t no thing. Because, as we all know, there’s definitely never any workplace drama at Rapid Ray's.
Rapid Ray's is for the Kids
Rapid Ray’s has always been a very hospitable establishment. The staff is wonderful, and they really do treat you like family. So, how do you advertise that in a commercial? Apparently, with a very awkward left-handed handshake with a customer, that’s how.
Graphics in Early 90's Commercials are Wonderful
I don’t care what the product or establishment might be, when appropriate, you need to show off a satisfied kid. And this commercial absolutely delivers. I mean, just look at how happy this kid is while hammering down some choccy milk. On a side note, I’d love to meet this kid, who’s probably pushing 40 at this point.
Is this a commercial or the beginning of a late-’80s sitcom? Honestly, who can tell the difference? And that’s not a criticism. Quite frankly, it’s perfect.
And how could I not give some love to the jingle? It’s catchy, entertaining, and fits the vibe perfectly. I still can’t get over how they managed to rhyme “fries” with “my-oh-my.” Hey, somehow it works.

Huge props to everyone involved with this 1993 project. The writer, director, music coordinator, and the staff at Rapid Ray's all knocked it out of the park. This is pure nostalgia at its finest, and I’m so glad it’s been shared with the world again.
Also, Rapid Rays should absolutely start airing this ad again. It would totally crush today.
