Do you have what it takes to be a minimalist? I have enough self-awareness to know that this way of life is not for me. BIG consumer over here! The bigger my home is, the more stuff I seem to accumulate. If I were forced to only have the bare necessities, I am not sure I could handle it.

However, if you are able to downsize, it can be a very rewarding way of life and extremely good for the environment.

As it turns out, some states are more ideal for a tiny house than others. A site called  LawnStarter ranked 2024's Best States for Tiny House Living, and New Hampshire came in as the #1 best state for tiny house living in an urban setting, and #22 overall.

So how was this data gathered? I'm so glad you asked!

Lawnstarter compared the 50 states on the legality of constructing a tiny home. They also analyzed the suitability of building in an urban setting based on average yard acreages. Finally, they looked into off-grid lifestyle-friendliness

They then calculated scores (out of 100 points) for each state to determine its rank in each factor, each category, and overall. A state’s overall score is the average of its scores across all factors and categories. The highest overall score ranked “Best” (No. 1), and the lowest “Worst” (No. 50).

Here are New Hampshire's results:

  • Average Yard Acreage - 1st
  • Tiny House Legality Score - 3rd
  • Off-Grid Lifestyle Index - 28th

I feel like people come to New Hampshire specifically to be off the grid. I am not surprised we fared so well in this survey. Would you ever consider living in a tiny home? Why or why not?
