This weekend, Julia Gagnon captivated the L/A Balloon Festival audience once again.

Her rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz left nearly everyone in tears. Myself included.

If you don't know who Julia is by now, we're not friends.

But also, Julia Gagnon, a Maine native, was also a competitor in the 22nd season of American Idol.

I emceed the entire weekend, and I remember telling my mom that Julia was going to be there. She was so excited to finally see her that she showed up early and grabbed her spot on the lawn. After announcing, I went to sit with my mom to enjoy the show.

Her set list was beautiful, and included songs like "Need a Favor", "In The Orange," "Layla," "Lucky," and her original, "Here in Maine." But when she sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," a fan favorite, she truly captivated the audience and my mother.

That song holds a deep place in our family's heart. I've sung it at the funerals of my YiaYia, Poppy, and Aunt Joanie, but the most challenging moment was when I sang it to say goodbye to my sister on the day she was laid to rest.

The song resonates deeply within us, touching our hearts and offering a sense of healing through the music. It was truly something special.

After her performance, my mother had the chance to meet Julia and personally thank her for the gift she had just given us.

Losing a child is an unimaginable pain that no one should endure, but there are rare moments when grief feels a little lighter and maybe even a bit beautiful. Julia gave my mom and me one of those moments, allowing us to reflect on the undying love we have for my sister, Katie.

Julia greeted everyone who came to see her, leaving the crowd filled with a sense of connection.
